22 Hanover Street was built as a pub to serve the growing community of laundry and railway workers after 1822. Called the Little Fox (the Big Fox was on Southover street now demolished for student housing) it was run by the Bond family for nearly 80 years before selling to Hotblacks Brewery in 1900 with "stock and goodwill" for £1000. It remained a pub until 1950's when it was converted into a house re-using many of the original pub doors and windows in the build. You can see the painted over pub signs at the front of the house as well as the concrete barrel rolling slip in the front garden. We added the 'Fox' stained glass in the skylight over the front door. The original hallway and front bar area was floored using bits of wooden beer crates marked with gilt letters Tamplins Brewery. Charles Cox, a neighbour was convicted and to sentenced to 8 months hard labour for climbing over the back wall to steal the owners "best boots" from the tap room in 1846. The Bonds lived rent free in the pub for 20 years as the leaseholder had headed off to America to "seek his fortune" Five years ago, someone knocked on our door to share the picture seen in the last photo of the details, It was among a group of coloured magic lantern slides they had bought in auction showing a rather formidable barmaid probably Anne Bond standing in the front garden clutching her jug of Kidd and Hotblacks beer.
